Reference Services
Reference Assistance for the entire collection of the library can be found at the Adult Reference Desk on the First Floor. Trained librarians are available during all library hours to
provide answers to your questions and to facilitate your use of the library and its many resources.
The main Reference collection includes general encyclopedias and dictionaries as well as
specialized sources in many areas. Copies of meeting minutes and other information from local
governmental units are kept here. In addition, college catalogs, pamphlets, pictures, and travel
materials are available for check out. The Business Reference area is adjacent to the main
reference room and houses resources such as encyclopedias, directories, newsletters, and recent
back periodicals dealing with business, corporate, and investment information.
Readers' Assistance Service
Librarians at the Readers' Assistance Desk are always ready to help you in your reading pursuits.
Librarians can suggest materials to fill a special interest or help to identify the locations of specific
titles or subjects in the collection. They can place Reserve or Interlibrary Loan requests for
materials not on the shelf. Check here for staff and published reviews of recent books.
Internet-Based Resources
A wide variety of electronic resources are available at the library. The library's electronic catalog
of materials, iBistro, is shared with approximately 20 other libraries and is available on computers throughout the library and available remotely from any internet connection. Additional databases are available in the library. Some of these sources are also available by remote connection. Visit the Info/Research page of our website for more specific information. The library home page on the Internet is located at http://www.wilmettelibrary.info. From
here you may access the catalog, as well as information about the library and links to Internet sites selected and reviewed by Adult and Youth librarians. Computers with Internet access are available for your use at the library. Reference librarians regularly offer classes and tutorials on how to use iBistro and the Internet.
Interlibrary Loan Services
When materials you need are not part of the iBistro system the library staff will try to obtain
them from other libraries. This service is available to Wilmette and Kenilworth card holders.
There is occasionally a fee for this service. You may contact the Reader's Assistance Desk at 847-256-6930 or e-mail the desk to request a particular title. Remember to include contact information with your request.
Group Study Rooms
There are two group study rooms available on a first come, first serve basis. They accomodate from 2 to 4 people. You may arrange to use the rooms at the Information Desk on the first floor across from the Circulation Desk.
Quiet Study Room
One room of the library has been set aside as a quiet study room where talking and the use of
electronic devices will not be allowed. It is located just to the east of the Readers' Assistance Desk across from the Large Print Collection.
Local History Collection
There is a small collection of materials relating to Wilmette that includes oral histories, photographs, biographical information, newspaper clippings and an index to recent years of the Wilmette Life. The library also maintains on online index to the Wilmette Life. You are encouraged to call ahead if you are looking for particular materials from the Local History Collection.
Library Collections
A wide variety of materials are available for your use. Circulating non-fiction books are arranged
by subject using the Dewey Decimal System. Fiction books are divided into Fiction, Mystery,
Suspense, Science Fiction, and Westerns. New books are kept separately in the New Book Area.
Large Type books and Books on Audiocassette or CD are also available. Musical CDs and cassettes,
feature film videos and computer CD-ROMs are on the first floor opposite the Circulation Desk.
Informational, non-fiction videos are shelved with books on the same subject. Current issues of
hundreds of periodicals are shelved in the Current Periodicals Reading Room on the second floor.
Up to three years of back issues of periodicals are kept on the north mezzanine; most may be
checked out for one week. Older issues may be kept in storage. Microfilm collections for prior
years of the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times and the Wilmette Life are available on the south end of the first floor. Our online databases provide coverage of many newspapers and magazines. You may access these online databases from the library's Info/Research page.
