SERVICES FOR SPECIAL NEEDS

The Wilmette Public Library District offers many materials and services for our visually impaired, physically disabled and homebound patrons. Please browse through the list of services below for more information about accessibility options.

In addition to the services and resources below, the library provides assistive listening devices (ALDs) for use during programs held in the library auditorium, and volume controls for the public telephones on the lobby and auditorium levels. On upper right corner of each of our adult web pages, we provide clickable large text icons for the visually-impaired. If you have any further questions please call the library Information Desk at 847-256-5025, or our TDD number for the hearing impaired at 847-256-6931.

WYNN Reader
WYNN Reader is a literacy software tool that scans and speaks printed text in a clear, human-sounding voice. It is available for use in the Large Print room. For information, ask at the Readers' Assistance desk, 847-256-6930.

Digital Reading Machine

Enlarged text is displayed through a wide-screen Panasonic monitor. Users can manipulate the position of the text and turn pages on the illuminated platform underneath the monitor. For information, ask at the Readers' Assistance desk, 847-256-6930.

Large Print Collection

The library maintains a vast collection of large print books in Adult Services, and also maintains a separate collection of large print titles for younger readers in our Youth Services department. For information, call Readers' Services at 847-256-6930 or Youth Services at 847-256-6945.

Audiobooks

The library has a large, up-to-date collection of fiction and nonfiction audiobooks in cassette and CD formats. Audiobooks are available for checkout from both the Adult and Youth collections. For information, call Readers' Services at 847-256-6930 or Youth Services at 847-256-6945.

Hand Magnifiers

We have two new handeld magnifiers available for circulation They can be checked out by Wilmette and Kenilworth residents only for a period of three weeks, and may be renewed if there are no holds. They can be requested at the Circulation desk in the lobby. For information, ask at the Readers' Assistance desk, 847-256-6930.

Home Delivery Service: "Books to Go"

Wilmette and Kenilworth cardholders who are temporarily or permanently unable to travel to the library may request home delivery of library materials. Participants may request books, audiobooks, videos, and other materials that will be delivered weekly by a WPL librarian. For information, call the Info Desk at 847-256-5025.

Talking Book Program

Talking Books are recorded books available to those with visual, physical, or reading disabilities. This free service provides audiobooks, braille, equipment, and catalogs. The books cover a wide range of fiction and nonfiction topics for all ages. To participate, you must submit a completed application (pdf) to the Voices of Vision Talking Book Center.
