Wi-Fi INFORMATION

The Wilmette Public Library is now offering Wi-Fi service. Wi-Fi (or Wi-fi,WiFi, Wifi, wifi), for "Wireless Fidelity", is a set of standards for wireless local area networks (WLAN) based on IEEE specifications. It enables a person with a wireless-enabled computer or personal digital assistant (PDA) to connect to the Internet by moving close to an access point, called "hotspot".

Computer Requirements:

You will need a laptop or personal digital assistant (PDA) with a standard Internet browser and a Wi-Fi compliant wireless Ethernet card. In most cases, the card will be installed in the PCMCIA slot on the side of the computer and will be loaded with the appropriate software. Some newer laptops have built-in Wi-Fi capability, in which case the operating system notifies the user to the availability of nearby networks.

Supported Wi-Fi Cards:

Our Wi-Fi network supports both 802.11b and 802.11g wireless standards. We do not support the installation of your wireless network card. You should ensure that your card and all supporting software is properly installed and known to be working. A brochure on connecting with Wi-Fi at the library is available at the public service desks in the library.

VPN Access:

Wilmette's wireless network does support VPN access. The network has been configured to pass PPTP and IPSEC packets. In most cases you need to contact your corporate VPN administrator.

Security:

Wilmette's wireless network is as secure as any open public access network. It is always a good idea to make sure you are on an SSL-encrypted web page prior to sending or receiving confidential information.
