Eastern Wilmette was once an American Indian reservation. It had been given to Archange Chevalier Ouilmette, a member of the Pottawatomie tribe, and her children as part of the Treaty of Prairie du Chien in 1829, in which American Indians were awarded land reserves for having helped assure the success of the treaty. Ouilmette was given approximately 1200 acres along Lake Michigan; 900 of these acres make up eastern Wilmette and the other 300 comprise part of north Evanston.

There are two different applications: one for residents who would like to replace a tree that was removed by the Village due to emerald ash borer infestation, and another general application. All applications are due by September 10. For more information, call the Forestry Division at (847)853-7600.
