Wilmette holds community meeting to discuss Village Center Master Plan

The Village of Wilmette will host a Community Workshop for the Village Center Master Plan on Thursday, September 16, at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Room at Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue. The purpose for the meeting is to gain public comment and feedback on a preferred development character for the Village Center. The comments and feedback collected at this meeting will be used to develop a final plan that will be sent to the Village Board for review.

Plant a tree! Applications Due September 10

Through the Village of Wilmette's Cooperative Tree Planting Program, residents can have a tree planted on the Village parkway. The shared-cost program allows residents to choose from a list of five tree species and to determine the size of the tree. There are two different applications: one for residents who would like to replace a tree that was removed by the Village due to emerald ash borer infestation, and another general application. All applications are due by September 10. For more information, call the Forestry Division at (847)853-7600.

Free wellness fair at the Wilmette Rec Center

A free family Wellness Fair will be held at the Wilmette Community Recreation Center on Sunday, August 29, at 1:00 p.m. The fair is sponsored by Hadassah Chicago Chapter and will feature seminars with doctors from Chicago-based hospitals, including Lutheran General Hospital and North Shore University HealthSystem as well as Hadassah Hospital in Israel. The fair also will feature healthy cooking demonstrations by Spertus Chef Laura Frankel, interactive lessons on yoga and pilates, medical screenings, and children’s activities sponsored by the Kohl’s Children’s Museum and the Wilmette Public Library. Special sessions for seniors devoted to "The Sandwich Generation" and "Senior Driving" will be led by staff from the CJE SeniorLife. New Metra Union Pacific North Line Schedule Effective August 21

Metra will begin work this month on a $185 million bridge and retaining wall construction project on the Union Pacific North Line. The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2018. There will be no disruption of service at any of the Union Pacific North Line stations during construction, but there will be minor adjustments to the train schedules. The schedule changes will be effective as of August 21, 2010.

Metra Holds Public Forums Regarding Upcoming New Train Schedules

In August, Metra will begin a multi-year project to replace 22 bridges on the north side of Chicago. Single tracking will occur between Clybourn and Rogers Park in order to accomplish this work, so Metra has proposed a new train schedule for the Union Pacific North Line. Metra will take public comment at regional forums on Monday, August 2, at 5:00 p.m. at the Lake Forest City Hall, 220 East Deerpath Road, and on Wednesday, August 4, at at 5:00 p.m. at the Evanston Public Library (Community Room), 1703 Orrington Avenue. Union Pacific Railroad Track Closures at Linden and Forest Avenues

The railroad tracks across Forest Avenue and Linden Avenue are about to be replaced, and the crossings are scheduled to be closed from August 2 to August 11 for the track work. The Forest Avenue detour will utilize Lake Avenue, and the Linden Avenue detour will utilize Wilmette Avenue. Contact the Village of Wilmette Engineering Department at (847) 853-7660 for additional information.

Changes Coming to Comcast Cable Service

On August 3, Comcast will begin converting Expanded Basic cable channels 24-75 into digital format. Customers subscribing to a package that includes the Expanded Basic Service channel lineup will need to have either a digital cable box, digital adapter, or CableCard for each television set with service. By August 25, all Expanded Basic Channels (26-72) will be transmitted into digital only format. Comcast is now providing one digital cable box and up to two digital adapters at no additional cost. Customers can obtain this equipment during a technician visit, by visiting a Comcast service center, or calling (866) 594-1234.

Wilmette Sidewalk Sale and Family Fun Fest

The Wilmette Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Wilmette Sidewalk Sale and Family Fun Fest on Friday and Saturday, July 9 and 10, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Village Center at Wilmette Avenue and Central Avenue as well as on Greenleaf Avenue. The Fest features entertainment, food, crafts, children’s activities, petting zoo, and “the best bargains on the North Shore.” A sidewalk sale will be held on the same days at Wilmette's Heritage Trail Mall, 410 Ridge Road, and Plaza del Lago, 1515 Sheridan Road, Wilmette..

Wilmette Park District's Independence Day Events

The Wilmette Park District's annual Fun Run/Walk for Fun/Youth Run/Pee Wee Run will take place on July 3 at Gillson Park. Registration opens at 7:00 a.m., and the events begin at 8:00 a.m. Evening activities, including sports, games, rides, entertainment, and food from local restaurants, begin in Gillson Park at 4:00 p.m. A concert featuring a sneak preview of Starlight Theatre's "The Sound of Music" and a performance by the Palatine Concert Band begins at 7:15 p.m. Fireworks will take place at 9:30 p.m.

Childhood Cancer Classic to be held July 12

The North Suburban Youth Foundation (formerly the Optimist Club of Wilmette) will hold its fifth annual Childhood Cancer Classic on Monday, July 12, at Westmoreland Country Club, Wilmette. Registration opens at 10:00 a.m., with a shotgun start at 12:00 p.m. All proceeds from the fundraiser support the fight against juvenile cancer. Players can participate for a donation of $400, which includes the evening banquet. Anyone wishing to attending the banquet and not the golf event may do so for $125. New this year is a round-robin doubles tennis tournament, which will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Westmoreland Country Club tennis courts. The cost is $150, which includes the evening banquet. Summer's here! It's time to swim!

Novice to advanced swimmers are invited to Open Water Swimming Clinics at Wilmette's Gillson Park Beach from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 30, July 14 and 28, and August 11 and 25. Swimming will take place rain or shine. All participants must be able to swim a half mile in 30 minutes or less. The focus will be on triathlon distances and other area swim events. A short beach discussion will be followed by hands-on coaching in the water. Topics discussed will include getting the right gear and equipment, breathing and sighting techniques, swimming in a straight line, pack swimming, and acclimation to cold water. Instructor/Host Marcia Cleveland, an English Channel soloist, national open water champion, coach and author, will host these training clinics and will be joined by other experienced instructors. Community members are invited to join Hands Across the Sand, an international organization concerned about protection of coastal economies, oceans, marine wildlife, and fishing industry, at an event on June 26 at 11:00 a.m. at Gillson Beach. Those in attendance will join hands at 12:00 p.m. and draw a line in the sand until 12:15. People throughout the world will be gathering at their local beaches on this day, and Hands Across the Sand expects that this event could become the largest gathering against off-shre drilling in history.

Nominate a building for a Wilmette Historic Preservation Award

Wilmette residents are invited to nominate buildings, gardens and/or landscapes that reflect or enhance the historic character of the Village for a Wilmette Historic Preservation Award. Residential, commercial, public, and religious buildings are eligible, as are their gardens or landscapes. Residents may nominate any property for an award, including their own, in any of the following categories: stewardship, restoration,sympathetic addition, and new construction. To nominate a property, residents should complete the Nomination Form and submit it by July 16. Awards will be presented to the owners of winning propertieson October 24 at the Wilmette Historical Museum.

Renew Beach and Pool Passes Online

The summer season has begun, and beach and pool season passes can now be renewed online. NEW this year is a photo ID for the Wilmette Beaches. The regular season hours will begin Saturday, June 12. To renew your Wilmette Beach and/or Centennial Family Aquatic Center season pass memberships online, click here to go to the Membership Renewal log-in page. If you prefer not to renew online, you may renew at any of our facilities during regular business hours. You may also mail your season pass application form to Centennial Family Aquatic Center, 2300 Old Glenview Road, Wilmette, IL 60091, or fax it to (847)256-8776. Hope for Haiti Concert

Come support local women musicians in a benefit concert for the women of Haiti at 7:00 p.m. on June 17 at the Wilmette Theater. Proceeds go to JASS, an organization that funds a camp for women in Haiti. There will be a raffle and giveaways throughout the night, including CDs, Shure headphones, spa services, tickets to shows, music/voice lessons, T-shirts, gift certificates, and more. Tickets for the event are $20 and may be purchased online.
