Spring Tree Planting

The Village’s Cooperative Tree Planting Program enables residents to plant a tree on the parkway by sharing the cost with the Village. To reserve a tree, applications for the program must be turned in no later than March 29. To register, pick up an application at the Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue, or download one at the Public Works' website. Contact the Public Works Forestry Division at (847) 853-7587 or forestry@wilmette.com for more information.

GOING GREEN MATTERS: Wilmette’s Green Fair, 2010

Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 14, when "Go Green Wilmette" holds its 2010 Green Fair. The event will feature information booths, exhibitor displays, and presentations on topics such as home energy conservation, solar energy, green home products, organic food choices, green landscaping, and transportation. All ages are welcome, and admission is free. The event will be held at the Woman’s Club of Wilmette, 930 Greenleaf Avenue, Wilmette, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Wilmette 2010 Vehicle Stickers on Sale

Wilmette vehicle stickers will be available for purchase as of March 1 and must be displayed by April 15. Residents who currently have a Village vehicle sticker will be mailed an application, and upon receipt of a completed application along with proper payment, will receive a vehicle sticker by mail. Stickers also may be purchased in person at the Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue. The fee is $80 for passenger vehicles and $95 for trucks.

Health Department Testing

The Village of Wilmette Health Department is offering Lipid Profile (cholesterol) and Glucose (diabetes) screening on February 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. This screening is by appointment only, requires a 12 hour fast, and costs $20. The Health Department also is offering a CPR Course on February 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The course costs $20, and registration is required. Blood Pressure Screenings are available every Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.; no appointment necessary. Wilmette Harbor Rotary Club Welcomes Visitors

The Wilmette Harbor Rotary Club meets weekly at 7:15 a.m. for informative breakfast sessions, and visitors are welcome to the meetings, which are held at the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club in Gillson Park. The soon-to-be 20-year-old club includes local leaders, professionals, adventurers, and activists who live or work in Wilmette and neighboring communities. The organization is composed of nearly 70 women and men committed to the Rotary value of service above self. Through hands-on activities and fund-raising events, the club is dedicated to improving the lives of children and families, be they 10,000 miles away or 10 blocks down the street. Black History Month Contests for K-8 Graders in Wilmette Schools

As part of the Black History Month Celebration in February, the Community Relations Commission of the Village of Wilmette is sponsoring a poster contest for students in grades K-8 and an essay/poetry, multimedia, and music contest for students in grades 5-8. All contestants must be enrolled in a Wilmette public or private school. Students may choose from three themes for their entries: (1) Significant accomplishments in African-American history, (2) Accomplishments of recent African-Americans (2008/20090, or (3) the African-American experience in the United States. All entries must be submitted by February 26. Winners will be recognized at a Wilmette Village Board meeting and will receive monetary awards in the form of savings bonds, sponsored by the North Shore Community Bank. Summer Enrichment Programs

Registration has begun for the Wilmette District 37/39 Summer Enrichment Program, which will take place from June 21 to July 23. The program will be held at McKenzie School for children in kindergarten through third grade, and at Highcrest Middle School for students in fourth through seventh grades. If you did not receive the catalog by mail, you can find it online or at the Mikaelian Education Center, 615 Locust Road, Wilmette, or at the Wilmette Public Library, 1242 Wilmette Avenue. Students need not be residents of Wilmette District 37 or 39 and may enroll in one, two or three classes daily. Registration closes March 5. Late registrations will be accepted between March 29 and May 7, 2010. A $25 late registration fee will be charged.

Early & Absentee Voting for the Primary Election

Early voting for the February 2 Primary Election will be held until January 28. The Early Voting locations include Wilmette's Centennial Park, 2300 Old Glenview Road; early voting is available from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Voters should bring a government-issued photo ID, such as a passport, driver’s license, or military ID. Early voting is conducted on touch screens. If you are unable to participate in Early Voting and will be unable to get to your polling place on Election Day, you may take part in Absentee Voting by mail. Any registered suburban Cook County voter may apply for an absentee ballot, and, according to a new Illinois law, it is not necessary to provide a reason to do so. The last day to apply for a mail-in absentee ballot is five days before the election.

Wilmette Resident To Be Inducted into Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Wilmette resident John "Jack" Jadel, who is one of four individuals in Illinois who will be inducted into the 2010 Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame, a program of the Illinois Conservation Foundation. Mr. Jadel is a longtime supporter of conservation education in Illinois. He has donated funds to support the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Division of Education's Schoolyard Habitat Action Grant Program. These grants enable teachers and students throughout Illinois to build wildlife habitat areas on school grounds and enhance natural resources education. The induction will take place on March 13, 2010.

Recycle your holiday lights

The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) and its member communities are offering a Holiday Light Recycling Program, free of charge. All holiday string lighting and extension cords can be dropped off at various locations throughout northern Cook County, including the Village of Wilmette Public Works Department, 711 Laramie Avenue. Outside drop-off at the front parking lot is available 24 hours until January 22, 2010. Garland, live greens, wreaths or other non-recyclables are not accepted in this program. Bring Your Toys for Tots to Wilmette Village Hall

Donations for the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program are being accepted until December 16 at the Wilmette Village Hall, 1200 Wilmette Avenue. If you wish to donate, please bring new, unwrapped toys to the drop-off box on the first floor. The mission of the Marine Corps' program is to collect toys during October, November, and December each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

District 39 students to get H1N1 Vaccination

The Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) has tentatively scheduled December 17 as the date for Wilmette District 39 students to receive the H1N1 vaccination. The vaccinations will be offered in all six of the district schools. Parents must sign a consent form for each child to receive the vaccine. If you do not wish for your child to participate, there is a separate non-participation form that states this intent. One form per child must be returned to your child's classroom or homeroom teacher by Wednesday, December 9. Please note that this is not a community clinic. Skokie Holds H1N1 Vaccination Clinics

The Village of Skokie will hold four community H1N1 vaccination clinics that will be open to individuals in the national H1N1 vaccination priority groups. These include pregnant women; people between 6 months to 24 years of age; people age 25 to 64 with underlying medical conditions, such as asthma or diabetes; healthcare workers; and caregivers of children under 6 months of age. The H1N1 vaccination clinics will be held at Oakton Community Center, 4701 Oakton Street, on the following dates: Thursday, December 3, and Wednesday, December 9, from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Sunday, December 6, and Saturday, December 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Vaccinations are free of charge and will be given by appointment only; appointments can be made by clicking here or by calling the Skokie Health Department at (847) 933-8252. After-school program for teenage girls

Haven Youth and Family Services, which recently moved to Wilmette, is beginning an after-school program for teenage girls who are sophomores, juniors, or seniors. The group will be assisted by a Haven staff member, but the members of the group will choose the activities. The group will meet Mondays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Haven, 825 Green Bay Road, Suite 200, and the first meeting will be held on November 30.
