    Join us in an enlightening discussion about some of the migrating birds that stop by our neighborhoods and parks this time of year, on their journey north. Learn about local opportunities for bird watching and how to create bird habitat in your backyard. We’ll also view breathtaking clips of migrating birds throughout the world.
  • The Shakespeare Project of Chicago: Love's Labours Lost

    The king and his friends pledge to remove themselves from women and devote their lives to study. Shortly thereafter, the princess of France and her ladies in waiting arrive, throwing the plan into chaos. This beloved Shakespeare comedy explores young love, with an unexpected ending.

    Ms. Konar will discuss her book, Mischling, at Wilmette Junior High School, 620 Locust Road, Wilmette. No tickets required. A book signing will follow the program. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. This event is funded by Friends of the Library.

  • Classics and Contemporary Book Club

    Join us for a lively discussion of James Baldwin's classic novel from 1953, Go Tell It On the Mountain. A fourteen-year-old boy discovers the terms of his identity as the stepson of the minister of a storefront church in 1930s Harlem. A beautifully told story of the struggle for self-invention and self-knowledge.
    Refreshments will be served.
  • Honor Flight Documentary Screening

    Honor Flight is a heartwarming documentary about four living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. Volunteers race against the lock to fly thousands of WWII vets to Washington DC to see the memorial constructed for them in 2004, nearly 60 years after their epic struggle. Stay for discussion following the film. Presented by JourneyCare.

  • Wilmette Police Dept. Heroin Forum
    When: Thursday, May 11, 2017 - 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
    Where: Auditorium

    Learn about the current dynamics of heroin use among young people, and important prevention and intervention strategies. Police officials will discuss the current data and provide information on the signs and symptoms of heroin addiction. A local parent of a heroin addicted youth will speak on their family's experience, and a police social worker and substance abuse counselors will identify resources available to the victims and their families. This forum is geared toward parents of teenagers.

    Trust in and consumption of traditional news sources continue to decrease, while comedy shows that focus on current events attract large audiences and receive awards for journalistic excellence. We will discuss how the ancient traditions of parody and satire continue to provide a civic function within our nation as evidenced in an examination of contemporary examples of political humor. Presented by Elizabeth Benacka, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Lake Forest College.

From “Casey at the Bat” to The Natural to Shoeless Joe (the novel basis for Field of Dreams) to the 2016 Cubs, this lecture will examine how different baseball narratives (the stories built into and spun out of the game itself) engage with larger conversations about American identity.     Roberta Miles is a romantic who sings jazz. A Chicago native, she's been performing in the Chicago Jazz scene for over 20 years. Her love and knowledge of the great American composers deepens her interpretation of the standards. Her performances feature songs by composers such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern and Frank Loesser.
