    Join us for a discussion of Pnin by Vladimir Nabokov. Pnin is a professor of Russian at an American college and his failure to grasp the subtleties of English causes him to become a running joke among his colleagues. A beautifully crafted portrait that will have readers questioning their assumptions.

  • Classics and Contemporary Book Club

    We'll be discussing The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. The night after a shooting star is seen streaking through the sky, terrifying tentacled invaders emerge from a strange cylinder discovered in London. Soon the whole of humanity is under threat from powerful Martians destroying all in their path. The forces of the Earth, however, may prove harder to beat than they thought. The first modern tale of alien invasion.

  • Tour the Newberry Library
    When: Wednesday, October 14, 2015 - 8:45 AM - 1:15 PM
    Where: Off-site

    Take a field trip to the Newberry Library, where Newberry staff will explain how to use their genealogy collections. Aimed at researchers new to the Newberry and/or new to genealogical research, the session will last approximately an hour, followed by a short tour of the library. Attendees will have the opportunity to use the Newberry Library’s collection following the orientation. Transportation by bus; 9 am departure, return by 1:30. Snacks will be provided. Wilmette and Kenilworth residents only. Registration required via the Library’s online calendar or by phone at 847-256-6930. Please include your e-mail when registering.
