Museum Adventure Passes

Starting September 1, Wilmette and Kenilworth library patrons can check out free passes to a number of Chicago-area museums, including the Kohl Children's Museum and the Brookfield Zoo. Passes can be checked out for one week. Pass privileges vary among museums, ranging from free admission for several family members to museum shop discounts. Visit the Museum Adventure Pass website for more information, and visit the WPL Youth Desk to check out passes. Please note: nonresidents must check out passes from their home library. Fall Storytimes

Fall storytimes start September 13! Our lapsit, toddler, and preschool storytimes are specially geared toward different age groups, ranging from infants to kindergartners. Kids' Literary Magazines

The 2010 kids' literary magazines are online for your viewing pleasure! Make a Splash is a traditional literary magazine with contributions from kids grades 2 and up. Scratch Cinema is a digital literary magazine created by kids entering grades 5 through 9. You can view both magazines here. (Posted 8/31/10)

More Summer Fun Ahead

Summer Reading Club has ended, but keep visiting the Library during August for more fun! Stop by our Reading Club Celebration on Monday, August 9, 6-8 p.m. for prize pick-up, entertainment, and refreshments. Hot Summer Programs for Kids

We have already reached capacity for our June 15 "Details, Details, Details" writing workshop with author Marlene Brill and our June 16 Scratch workshop. Don't despair, however! We will offer more writing and Scratch workshops in July. Sign up promptly starting July 1 to ensure your spot. Meanwhile, there's still room in our June 22 "Treasure Boxes" craft program. Sign Up for Summer Reading!

Kids, this summer, join a Summer Reading Club! You'll receive prizes and, even better, the enjoyment of reading or listening to a good book. Sign-ups begin Monday, May 24, and continue until the clubs end. Summer Reading Clubs begin Monday, June 7, and end Sunday, August 1. A closing celebration will be held Monday, August 9. This program is for Wilmette and Kenilworth residents and nonresidents who attend Wilmette and Kenilworth Schools. For more information, see the Youth Services website. (Posted 5/26/10)

International Scratch Day

Calling all Scratchers and would-be Scratchers, children and adults! Saturday, May 22, come to the Library Auditorium between 9 a.m. and noon. We'll be taking part in an international celebration of Scratch, a digital media design program. Everyone will have an opportunity to learn Scratch and make a special Scratch Day project. Participants are invited to bring their already finished projects to show the group. Also, Ricarose Roque, a computer program developer, will be on hand to answer questions. Scratch t-shirts will be available for lucky winners, and refreshments will be served. Please bring your own laptop if you have one. Questions? Wilmette Library Photos Online

On Friday, February 12, 33 children participated in our Mardi Gras Masks program, creating beautiful, colorful masks with feathers and bangles. We were able to take photos of just a few before they slipped out the door into the cold. Check out these photos, as well as the Wilmette Public Library's other photos, on our Flickr account. Vote! Let it Snow Scratch Contest

Kids have made snow-themed Scratch projects for the contest. They're now posted on the Scratch website, where you can view them and vote on them. To vote, log on to http://scratch.mit.edu/users/wplsnow. Open a project and click on "Love It." The project with the most "Love It" votes wins. The winning project will be posted on the WPL website and the winner will get a gift card to Borders. Anyone can vote February 5 through February 28. Scratch is a digital media design program that allows users to create games, animations, and digital stories. (Posted 2/9/10)

Free Tutoring for Kids

Did you know that the Wilmette Library, along with dozens of other area libraries, offers free tutoring via an online service called Tutor.com? It's for learners of all ages, from kindergarten through adult, and covers basic subjects such as English, math, science, and social studies.
