HOW TO FIND ARTICLES
IN MAGAZINES AND NEWSPAPERS

The Wilmette Public Library has several subscription databases that you may use to find articles. These databases are available on computers in the Adult Reference Room and Youth Services Room. Most of these databases are also available outside the library through our web page if you have a WPL library card. These databases have indexes that cover a wide range of journal and newspaper titles. In many cases, they provide full text access to the articles indexed. In some cases, we will have the print version of the article in the library because we subscribe to that particular magazine or newspaper.

Full Text and Citation Databases

To search the databases available remotely, you will need to locate them on the WPL webpage. You will find them at our Research Databases page. This page lists various databases and indicates if they are available outside the library. Once you have selected and gained access to a database you will need to construct your search using words or phrases. You may want to read the help section of the particular database to find out the best way to search the database. You may also call the Reference Desk, 847-256-6935, to speak with a librarian about searching the various databases.

Newspaper Articles

For newspaper articles you may want to use the library's electronic subscriptions to the Chicago Tribune, The New York Times Historical (1851-2001), the Wall Street Journal and the Chicago Sun-Times, (the latter three through the Proquest database). These subscriptions provide online indexes with full text capability. You will find links to these databases on our Research Databases page. We also have print indexes and microfilm collections to the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and Wilmette Life as well as an online index to the Wilmette Life. For more specific information about what time period these collections cover and what parts of the newspaper are indexed contact the Reference Room at 847-256-6935.

Periodicals Collection

The library also subscribes to over 600 magazines and newspapers. Back issues of most magazines may be checked out for a week. The Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, located in the Youth Services and Adult Reference areas, is a print index to general interest magazines. You may search the index for articles by author, subject or title. There are also subject specific print indexes in the Adult Reference Room that you may also find useful for finding articles. If you are looking for articles from more than 20 years ago, you will want to use these print indexes.
