The following premium databases are useful for locating authoritative Health and Medical information. (WPL card required for remote access)

  • Health and Wellness Resource Center
    A one-stop resource for health information from magazines, journals, reference books, and pamphlets. The full-text of many of the periodical articles is available online and may be printed out or emailed to another location. Links to specially selected websites also are provided. Available at Reference workstations or at www.wilmette.lib.il.us/virrefa.html
  • Medline
    Index with abstracts to thousands of articles from medical journals. Available at Reference workstations or at www.wilmette.lib.il.us/virrefa.html (through FirstSearch database; call 847-256-6935 contact library for login and password).
  • Physicians' Desk Reference Electronic Library
    Includes the authoritative PDR drug handbook, a drug interactions search feature, a dictionary of herbal medicines, and Stedman's Medical Dictionary. Available in the library at Reference workstations (use IE browser).

  • Clinical Trials -- Current information about clinical research studies.
  • Healthfinder -- A free guide to reliable consumer health and human services information, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Health Pages Online Health Care Resources -- designed to empower people with information regarding general health, men's health, women's health, childern's health, health-realted finances, and more.
  • Infotrac Health Reference Center -- 1996-present -- Periodical index to database of articles, many full text, on health related issues; for remote access, you will need to provide your Wilmette library card number. (Select "General OneFile" and/or "Gale Virtual Reference Library.")
  • InteliHealth -- Provides health news and content as well as access to trackers, tools and risk assessments. Information is gathered from various sources including Harvard Medical School and University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.
  • MayoClinic.com -- Owned by Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, this site provides access to the experience and knowledge of the more than 2,000 physicians and scientists of the Mayo Clinic. Information on diseases and conditions, drugs, healthy lifestyle planning, first aid and more.
  • MEDLINEplus -- Health information from the National Library of Medicine. Designed for health professionals and consumers, this site has extensive information from the National Institutes of Health as well as other sources.
  • U.S. National Network of Libraries of Medicine -- Access to medical information for health professionals as well as the public from a nationwide network of health science libraries and information centers. Assists in search strategies for health information, resources and projects. Users can search for medical libraries and their holdings.
  • WebMD -- Health and medical news and information, including sections on wellness, self-care, sports and fitness and family genetics. Also enables users to maintain their own health records on the site.

  • InteliHealth: Drug Resource Center -- Information about specific drugs as well as medications in general.

  • MayoClinic.com: Drug Information -- Find information on more than 8,000 prescription and over-the-counter drugs from the United States Pharmacopeia.

  • PDR Health: Drugs and Supplements -- A consumer-oriented site from the publishers of the PDR (Physicians' Desk Reference). Registration at no charge is required.

  • RxList -- "The internet drug index," this site provides information on prescribed drugs as well as alternative products.

  • SafeMedication.com -- Published by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, this site provides information about specific medications as well as fact sheets about important health issues and medication tips and recommendations.

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention -- Health-related information from the federal agency designed to protect individuals' health and safety. Includes information on a wide range of disease and health topics including travelers' health information, health statistics, environmental health, occupational health, and foodborne illnesses.
  • Food and Drug Administration -- Information for consumers, patients, health professionals, from the federal agency whose mission is to assure the safety of foods and cosmetics, and the safety and efficacy of pharmaceuticals, biological products and medical devices. Includes special information for women and seniors.
  • National Institutes of Health -- From the world's premier medical research organization and the U.S. Government's center for research in the U.S., this site provides general health information, grants and funding information, news, and links to scientific resources.

  • United States Department of Health and Human Services -- From the United States government's principal agency for health and human services, this site provides a wealth of information on health, diseases, conditions and more.
