Winter Reading Club Starts January 4

"Warm Up With Winners" begins Monday, January 4 and runs through Sunday, March 7. The club is open to Wilmette and Kenilworth residents of all ages. No sign-up is required. Pick up your log, a suggested reading list for adults and teens, and an incentive gift at the Adult Reader's Assistance Desk. Kids up through 8th grade, pick up a reading log at the Youth Services Desk. Participants who read or listen to at least three books will receive a completion gift of goodies and will be entered in the grand prize drawings. A Celebration Party will be held on Monday, March 8, 4:30-6:30. There will be refreshments and grand prize drawings, including fleece blankets and a coupon for a free cooking class at Wilmette's own Fuel Restaurant and Cooking School. Scratch Winter Competition: Let it Snow!

Have you attended a Scratch workshop at WPL? Why not put your talents to the test and enter our Winter Scratch Competition? The challenge is to make a Scratch project that features snow. It can be a game, an animation, a story or a music video. Projects will be accepted January 4 through January 31. Bring your project on a flash drive labeled with your name to the Youth Services Desk, or e-mail it to Janet Piehl at jpiehl@wilmettelibrary.info. Each contestant may submit one project. The winner will be determined by the number of "Love It" votes the project receives. Anyone can vote during the month of February. To vote, go to http://scratch.mit.edu/users/wplsnow. The winning project will be posted on the WPL website and the winner will receive a gift card for Borders.

Olive Kitteridge Selected as WPL's 2010 One Book, Everybody Reads Title

The Wilmette Public Library is proud to announce that Olive Kitteridge, the Pulitizer Prize winning novel by New York Times best-selling author Elizabeth Strout, is the selection for our 2010 "One Book, Every Body Reads" program. Ms. Strout will speak about her book in Wilmette on May 16, 2010. As in previous years, the library will present a series of programs in the spring that are related to the book. Lyric Opera Lecture

Members of the Lyric Opera Lecture Corps will present an hour long lecture, accompanied by recorded music. The lecture will take place in the Small Meeting Room. The Elixir of Love by Gaetano Donizetti will be highlighted on January 13, 2010. The Wilmette Chamber of Lyric Opera and the Library co-sponsor the series.

Sheridan's The Rivals - February 27

With Mrs. Malaprop, restoration playwright Richard Sheridan coined a new phrase and created one of the most enduring comic figures in drama. Presented by The Shakespeare Project of Chicago. The production is scheduled for Saturday, February 27 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Church, 1235 Wilmette Avenue. Thanks to Friends of the Library for funding this production.

Lyric Opera Lecture

Join us on Wednesday, September 30th at 10:00 am when members of the Lyric Opera Lecture Corps will present an hour long lecture, accompanied by recorded music. The lecture will take place in the Small Meeting Room. The topic for September 30th is Faust by Charles Gounod. The Wilmette Chamber of Lyric Opera and the Library cosponsor the Lyric Lecture Series.
