The Wilmette Public Library is looking for Substitute Adult Service Librarians to provide exceptional reference and reader’s advisory assistance to our adult and teen patrons. Applicants must have excellent customer service skills, be intellectually curious, and up-to-date on emerging technologies. A successful candidate will also have a flexible schedule and be able to make informed decisions independently.

Substitute Adult Services Librarian Responsibilities:

  • Provide general and in-depth reference assistance and reader advisory, using a variety of print and on-line resources.
  • Maintains and applies a current knowledge of books, authors and trends in library services and programs.
  • Assists in the maintenance of library collections including but not limited to, books, periodicals, on-line databases, and media.

Hours & Comp:

  • Must be available to work daytime, evening and weekend hours on an as needed basis. Friday and weekend availability is essential.
  • Substitute Hourly Rate: $24.53


  • MLS or MLIS degree from an accredited graduate library school required.
  • Must demonstrate excellent customer service and experience in a public library setting required.
  • Working knowledge of reference resources, in both print and non-print formats.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Ability to understand and use our technology and troubleshoot technology-related issues.
  • Ability to demonstrate broad practical experience with integrated library systems software and subscription databases.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
