Welcome Desk Assistant

Would you like to be the welcoming face and voice of Wilmette Public Library? We are looking for a warm and personable individual to fill our part-time role of Welcome Desk Assistant who will greet and welcome all patrons to the library, both in-person and over the phone! This key role will help direct the flow of patron traffic and incoming calls, assist patrons with general questions, and schedule and maintain records for our study and meeting room reservations. The Welcome Desk Assistant is a primary point of contact for our patrons so this position requires patience, professional composure, quality customer service skills, and multi-tasking capabilities.

Welcome Desk Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Answer incoming phone calls and route those calls to appropriate departments and individuals.
  • Assure proper screening of calls to the appropriate departments and provide information as needed while demonstrating the highest level of professional phone demeanor and customer service skills.

Hours & Compensation:

  • Part-time, non-exempt position with hours that fluctuate between 10.5 and 15 hours per week. Weekly schedule is:
    • Monday and Wednesday: (5:30pm – 9:00pm) with a Friday and weekend rotation. Fridays - (5:30pm – 9:00pm) Weekends - (Saturdays: 9:00am – 5:00pm & Sundays: 12:00pm – 5:00pm)
  • Starting hourly rate:
    • $15.00/hour


  • High School Diploma/GED required. College degree preferred.
  • Must be able to handle multi-phone line system with efficiency, accuracy, and patience.
  • Must be able to demonstrate exceptional customer service skills.
  • Must be highly motivated with upbeat, positive demeanor.
  • Previous switchboard experience a plus, but not required.
  • Experience and ease with computer usage required.
  • Ability to take direction and work independently.
  • Flexibility to work and pick up extra shifts highly desirable.
