Wilmette and Kenilworth residents may apply for a library card by filling out our online Library Card Application. Your card can be picked up at the library within 60 days.

To obtain a Wilmette Public Library card, you must present a photo ID with current Wilmette or Kenilworth address, or a photo ID and proof of current residency, and complete the library card application form at the Circulation Desk. Wilmette residents' library cards are valid for three years from the month of issue and Kenilworth residents' library cards are valid until a specific date (currently June 30, 2023).

Children under high school age must be accompanied by a parent when applying for a card. A parent (or guardian) is required to sign the child's registration, thus accepting financial responsibility for materials checked out to the child.

Long-term temporary residents who live within the Library District, such as nannies, au pairs, foreign exchange students, and in-home caregivers, may apply for a temporary library card. Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements and a valid identification/address verification must be presented by the resident cardholder on behalf of the applicant, who assumes responsibility for the account and any resources borrowed. These cards are valid for one year and can only be used at Wilmette Public Library.

Businesses and not-for-profits located in the District service area are eligible to receive one library card upon annual presentation of the owner/managers personal photo identification and the business’s current tax bill, lease agreement, or utility bill. These cards are valid for one year and can only be used at Wilmette Public Library.

In accordance with 75 ILCS 16/30-55.60, a nonresident who, as an individual or as a partner, principal or stockholder, or other joint owner, owns taxable property within the District or is a senior administrative officer of a firm, business, or other corporation owning taxable property within the District, may obtain one library card for that parcel of property at no charge. These cards are valid for one year and can only be used at Wilmette Public Library.

Responsibility

When patrons register for a Wilmette Public Library card, they sign an agreement form accepting responsibility for the card as follows:
“I agree to be responsible for this card and all materials checked out on this card unless it is report lost or missing. I am responsible for all charges that may result from late return, loss, or damage of materials. I am aware that there are no age restrictions on borrowing any library materials, and I accept sole responsibility for my child’s selection of materials.”

Lost, Missing, or Stolen Card

Please report a lost, missing or stolen library card immediately by contacting the Circulation Desk at 847.256.6947. For the safety and privacy of your library account, please do not lend your card to others. 

Right to Privacy

To the extent permissible under current law, it is the policy of the library that a patron's library card number will not be supplied, by staff, to any other patron or entity, and all records relating to your library card and the materials you borrow are confidential.
