Starting with this simple guide, this article offers resources and books gathered by our librarians to support you and your loved ones.
When talking about complex topics, choose a setting that helps you and your child feel calm and emotionally regulated. Reading together creates a safe and comforting space, or you could take a walk or do some coloring.
Ask open questions. “What have you noticed?” “What questions do you have?”
Listen reflectively and name feelings. “That sounds scary.” “It feels unfair when people we care about are treated unkindly.”
Give honest, age-appropriate answers. “ICE agents look for people who have come here from other countries.” “Some people may not be able to live in this country because of current laws.”
Offer constant reassurance. “You are safe. You are loved. We are together.”
Books can be gateways to meaningful conversation, and they offer language, imagery and context to build understanding and connection. Ask a librarian to find just-right books for you and your loved ones or check out this list of recommended titles. We are happy to offer assistance via phone or email and to place materials in our 24/7 outdoor lockers for pickup.
