Grab some tape and scissors—you’re ready for a sensory adventure at home! During our weekly Little Dabblers program, Jennifer Lee, Youth Services librarian, shared simple and engaging activities that families can easily recreate using everyday materials like painter’s tape and scissors.
Little ones ages 2 and up explored cutting zigzag lines, peeling tape to “rescue” animals, freeing toys from cones, and more. Each small movement offered a fun challenge for toddlers as they experimented with new skills. With caregiver guidance, children practiced fine motor development, visual perception, and basic problem-solving in a playful, supportive environment.
These activities use materials you likely already have at home. Turn them into a game, give simple directions, and most importantly—have fun learning together! 😊
These are fine motor activities you can try at home using simple materials!
Toy Tape Rescue
Materials: Small toys (animal toys preferred) and masking or painter’s tape
Tape the toys onto a surface and let your little one rescue them by pulling the tape.
Cutting Zigzag Lines
Materials: Child-safe scissors, paper, and marker
Draw zigzag lines on a piece of paper. Let your child cut along the lines to practice holding and using scissors.
Colorful Tape Tearing
Materials: Colorful tape and paper (a large sheet is preferred)
Encourage your little one to tear colorful tape and stick it onto the paper to strengthen finger muscles.
Cookie Cutter Shape Drawing
Materials: Cookie cutters, crayons, and paper
Let your child trace along the cookie cutters to practice line drawing—a nice way to build fine motor control.
