This winter I read the book Winter Holiday by Arthur Ransome. It is in the series Swallows and Amazons. It is about two families that go to live at a lake house with an island during the breaks. The kids are very imaginative and go on lots of adventures.

I read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. It’s a true story about an Olympic runner (Louis Zamperini) who gets sent off to war and was captured by Japan and then became a prisoner of war.

I read Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong. It’s the second in a duology called These Violent Delights. I would give the book a 4/5 because although most of the time it was very good and exciting, there were moments that were really boring and slow.

This winter I read Frankenstein--outside of school, just for fun. I thought that it was really good. It was interesting to me to see how Shelley made such a depressing story so interesting.

Empire of Storms is the fifth book in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas. This series is very long and can be slow at times. This book was slow to begin with but was more exciting toward the end. I almost gave up on this book but was glad that I stuck with it.

“The Unwanteds” by Lisa McMann is set in a dystopian world called Qwill where people are split into three categories at the age of 13, wanted, necessary, and Unwanted. If you were one of the lucky wanteds you went to university.

I read The Hunger Games. I am not a huge reader but this one caught my attention. I loved the action in the games and how much strategy was involved. The whole back story about why the games had to happen was a bit weird, but I guess there had to be a reason for all the drama.

I read The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle. This was a page-turning mystery about a man named Aiden Bishop. He wakes up in a forest not knowing who he is or remembering anything from his life.

The Nintendo Switch system has a few new games ready to be played! Come try them out Monday nights during the Your Space drop-in program from 5-8pm in the Teen Room, and keep an eye on the events calendar for more opportunities. Want to suggest games for purchase?

Brigid Kemmerer is one of those authors that I find to be very reliable in that her writing is always consistent, no matter what genre she tackles. I’m partial to her contemporary fiction, but recently have decided to explore more of her fantasy series.

Elatsoe is set in an recognizable but slightly different contemporary America, where magic and magical beings are commonplace. People can travel by Fairy Ring (it’s regulated); vampires have rights (and “old age” homes); and magic can be studied in university.

“Bravery meant the possibility of death. And wasn’t that funny? Because it took being dead for Wallace to finally be brave.”
