Strictly Business: AI & Cybersecurity Awareness

Start Date

On October 24, Go Technology Group's founder and chief IT architect John Marta keynoted Wilmette Public Library's Fall 2025 Lunch & Learn session, exploring the ever-evolving state of cybersecurity in the age of AI. GO Technology Group is a Chicago-based managed IT services provider. They have contributed this follow-up post with reflections on John Marta's talk, as well as linking to additional resources and further reading.

We were honored to partner with the Wilmette Public Library for an engaging discussion on how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping cybersecurity for small businesses and community organizations. Our goal was to help participants feel more confident about emerging technologies (not intimidated by them) by breaking down complex ideas into practical steps anyone can take to stay secure online.

AI can be a powerful ally in detecting suspicious activity faster and more accurately. It can analyze patterns across emails, sign-ins, and devices to identify unusual behavior before problems escalate. However, cybercriminals are also using AI to create more convincing phishing messages and scams. That’s why we emphasized balance: combining innovative tools with tried-and-true fundamentals such as multi-factor authentication, staff awareness, secure backups, and routine updates.

During our session, we shared real-world examples and lessons learned from supporting local organizations across Chicago’s North Shore. We discussed how enabling multi-factor authentication, training employees to recognize phishing attempts, and keeping devices up to date are simple yet effective steps that dramatically reduce the risk of cyber incidents. For organizations with limited resources, we recommended starting with identity protection, verified backups, and consistent cybersecurity awareness training.

One of the most rewarding parts of the discussion was hearing the thoughtful questions from attendees. Many wanted to know how to safely experiment with AI tools for daily operations, protect client data in the cloud, or strengthen security for hybrid work environments. These questions reflected the same curiosity and responsibility we see among the local business community - a genuine commitment to learning and protecting customers.

We’re grateful to the Wilmette Public Library for hosting this program and for their ongoing efforts to support entrepreneurs and small businesses through education and access to resources. Their commitment to building digital literacy makes a real difference in how our community approaches technology.

For those interested in continuing their learning, we recommend exploring reputable cybersecurity resources such as CISA’s Small Business Cybersecurity Corner and the FTC’s cybersecurity materials for business owners.  Both provide accessible, actionable guidance that aligns with what we shared during the event.

At GO Technology Group, we believe community education plays a vital role in strengthening cyber resilience. As a Chicago managed service provider, we help organizations throughout Wilmette, Kenilworth, and the greater North Shore stay proactive, secure, and connected. We appreciate everyone who joined us for the session and look forward to future opportunities to collaborate with the Library and local organizations. Together, we can stay informed, secure, and ready for the next wave of technological change.
